Kids will love to help make this fun Valentine's Day treat and really love to dip them in a simple chocolate fondue!
These Cinnamon Sugar Hearts are the perfect Valentine's Day treat. Plain or dipped in a simple chocolate fondue, they are the perfect way to say I love you!
Valentine's Day is just around the corner and as a mom I'm always looking for ways to make holidays fun and special for my kids. I especially love finding ways for us to create memories and baking together is the perfect way to do that!
I had so much fun making these simple Cinnamon Sugar Hearts with my kids this year. There are lots of steps that little hands can do and of course they loved dipping the final product in a simple chocolate fondue. The chocolate wasn't part of our original plan, but it ended up so fun and delicious, so I'll include a simple recipe for that too.
All you need to make these simple bites are some thawed Rhodes Dinner Rolls, butter, cinnamon and sugar. Plus some chocolate chips and coconut oil if you want to make fondue.
First, allow the rolls to thaw. I usually cover mine and allow them to thaw on the counter for an hour or two, but you can also thaw them in a hurry using your microwave. Just follow the instructions on the back of the bag.
Once the rolls are thawed, cut each roll into 4 pieces. I just washed our kids scissors with dish soap and hot water and then let my kids do the cutting steps.
To make the heart shape, just cut an extra slit in the rounded side of each piece. We cut about half way down so that the heart shape didn't disappear when the dough rose and was cooked.
Place all of the heart shaped roll bites on a large cookie sheet and allow to rise for 20-30 minutes.
Next, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully add a few hearts to the boiling water and allow to boil for 30 seconds on one side. Flip each roll and allow to boil for another 30 seconds on the other side.
When both sides have boiled, remove the rolls and allow to dry on a paper towel lined plate while you continue to boil the rest of the hearts.
Place the hearts on a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees F for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
While they are baking, melt 1/4 cup butter and mix together 1/4 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a large bowl. Brush both sides of the heart bites with the melted butter and then roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture (this was my daughter's favorite part! :)).
Optional Addition: We added our Cinnamon Sugar Hearts to skewers with strawberries, bananas, and brownie bites. Then we made a simple chocolate fondue with 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon unrefined coconut oil. Mix the chocolate chips and coconut oil together in a microwavable bowl. Microwave on high 30 seconds at a time, stirring between each 30 second interval until the chocolate is melted and smooth.

12 Rhodes Dinner Rolls, thawed
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup chocolate chips
1 teaspoon coconut oil
Cut each thawed roll into 4 pieces. Cut a slit on the curved side of each roll piece to make a heart shape. Allow the roll bites to rise for 20-30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and bring a large pot of water to boil on the stove.
Once the roll bites are nice and puffy, carefully transfer 8-10 of them to the boiling water. Boil for 30 seconds and then flip each heart and boil on the other side for 30 seconds. Remove them from the water and allow to dry on a paper towel while you boil the rest of the heart bites 8-10 at a time.
Place the boiled bites on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake in the 375 degree oven for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown. While the bites are cooking, melt the butter and mix the sugar and cinnamon together in a large bowl.
Brush both sides of the heart bites with the melted butter and then roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
To make the fondue: Mix the chocolate chips and coconut oil together in a microwavable bowl. Microwave on high 30 seconds at a time, stirring between each 30 second interval until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
Dip the heart bites in the chocolate and ENJOY!
